Bergse Diepsluis Oesterdam is a popular dive site. It lies in a tributary of the Oosterschelde. This causes the tidal effect to be almost nonexistent, making the Bergse Diepsluis an ideal dive site for beginners. Typical for the Bergse Diepsluis are the many cuttlefish that migrate to this site in the spring. To come here to mate. Hundreds of divers visit this location every year, just to witness this phenomenon. Those who want to witness it should keep an eye on the water temperature. As soon as it reaches 12 degrees Celsius, the cuttlefish arrive in large numbers. The underwater world of Bergse Diepsluis consists of basalt blocks and ancient rock formations. Every year special cuttlefish tents are added by volenteers. They attrack seahorses and the cuttlefish and squid use them to lay their eggs.

Particulars

The Bergse Diepsluis Oesterdam can be entered via a concrete staircase with handrail. Dive across the shallows past the overgrown oyster beds, toward the sloping wall and the dive platform. The platform is nicely overgrown with oysters, and attacks large schools of small fish in early spring. Lobsters, crabs and eels can be spotted near the large stones and basalt blocks (see dive map) and here and there you will find the most beautiful sea dahlias. A Project Baseline measuring point hangs from the platform. Information on how it works can be found on the board next to the dike stairs.

Warnings

Bergse Diepsluis Oesterdam is a busy dive site in weekends. Finding your way back to the entry point can be a challenge.
